53th Biennale Venice / Australian Pavilion / Claire Healy & Sean Cordeiro

Outside of the official giardini complex at the venice biennale, we found an other stunning australian masterpiece. The offsite Australian representation, at the ‘ludoteca-gallery’ in the Castello district, showed even more of the (very nice) art-output from down-under. Most exciting was an massive installation, created by Claire Healy and Sean Corderio called ‘Life Span’. Made from 175.218 VHS video cassettes. This solid block, which really reminds me of Kubrik’s black monolith in his space odyssey, has got the proud measures of 480x318x524cm. The combined running time of these cassettes, if played consecutively, is around 60.1 years: the average human life span in 1976; the year when the VHS was released. – Marvelous. Photo by Ella Condon.
